New program to spotlight UTSA writing and performing talent

(Feb. 12, 2002)--The UTSA Department of Communication announces a new performance program "UTSA's Own," which will be produced annually by faculty member Phil Hoke. The new program will highlight the writing and performing talents of UTSA students, faculty, staff and alumni.

The inaugural program will include two performances including the one-act play "Joice Heth: The Nurse of Giants" by Phil Hoke and "Transitions in the Key of Life," a reading of poetry by Ann-Marie Moore. Moore will portray Heth and read her poetry.

Performances are 7:30 p.m., Feb. 19-22 in the Buena Vista Street Building Theater at the Downtown Campus. Tickets are $5 for the Feb. 19-21 performances, and $20 for the Feb. 22 performance, which is a fund-raiser to develop communication department scholarships. Special refreshments will be served during the fund-raiser intermission.

The Feb. 19 performance is presented in conjunction with African American Heritage Week. The production will also benefit the UTSA Creative Writing Series and the UTSA chapter of Public Relations Student Society of America.

Tickets are available at the 1604 Campus Ticket Master, (210) 458-4735; Downtown Campus Student Leadership office, Durango Building Room 1.302, (210) 458-2816; or at the door.

"Joice Heth: The Nurse of Giants," is a one-act, one-woman play chronicling the controversial life of Joice Heth, a supposed slave-nurse to the infant George Washington. Heth was also the first person put on display by P.T. Barnum. Hoke's play, written for the Hertzberg Gallery Theater in 1997, was recently featured in the San Antonio Library's celebration of George Washington.

Ann-Marie Moore earned her UTSA bachelor's degree in English and graduated magna cum laude in May 1995. Her writings have appeared in several magazines and anthologies including Versus Poetry Journal, Leading Edge magazine and Cyber Facts. She originated the role of Joice Heth in 1997 and recently read her poetry at Our Lady of the Lake University's annual poetry festival.
