College of Engineering praised by accreditation team

(Jan. 7, 2002)--The University of Texas at San Antonio College of Engineering was recently praised following an evaluation of its undergraduate programs. The college was evaluated by a visiting team from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) based in Washington, D.C. The evaluators reviewed student projects, lab reports and class assignments and discussed current and future programs with faculty and administrators.

"The evaluation team was extremely pleased with the development of our Ph.D.and undergraduate programs," said Zorica Pantic-Tanner, dean of the College of Engineering. "They saw that we improved curriculum with various concentrations in each program, hired and retained faculty members and increased our student enrollment by 12 percent."

Pantic-Tanner, who began in her position in August, spent her first three months preparing for the site visit by meeting with faculty members and students to gather their input. She is one of only 11 female engineering deans in the United States.

The College of Engineering has an enrollment of over 1,000 students and offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in civil engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. It was established in September 2000, created out of the Division of Engineering.

UTSA engineering students recently received a number of accolades for their accomplishments. Four students are working with Ford Motor Company to patent an environmentally friendly car which took first place in a national design competition hosted by Ford. UTSA's student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) competed at the National Concrete Canoe Competition for the fifth consecutive year. The organization designed and constructed the canoe using specific guidelines. ASCE qualified for nationals with their first place finish at the regional competition.

UTSA's civil, mechanical and electrical engineering undergraduate programs are ranked among the top 50 U.S. News and World Report Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs. With three doctoral programs on the horizon, UTSA's College of Engineering is playing a key role in positioning the University of Texas at San Antonio to become one of the top-tier research universities in the state.
