Center for Water Research hosts orientation session Jan. 17
(Jan. 17, 2002)--The UTSA Center for Water Research will host a graduate research assistant orientation session for students associated with the Center tonight, Jan. 17, from 5-6 p.m. in Science Building Room 103.58. Center for Water Research faculty will attend the session.

UTSA to hold information sessions on doctoral program in educational leadership
(Jan. 16, 2002)--There will be information sessions at the 1604 and Downtown campuses from 6:30-8 p.m. Jan. 23 on UTSA's educational leadership doctoral program. Faculty and current students will be on hand to answer questions and speak about opportunities afforded by the program. Other topics will include admissions criteria and procedures, program content and research, and fellowship opportunities.
The 1604 Campus session will be in Business Building Room 3.03.02, and the Downtown Campus session will be in Frio Street Building Room 2.512 via interactive television link-up.

UTSA plans graduate program information days
(Jan. 16, 2002)--Interested in pursuing a master's or doctoral degree? Learn more about the opportunities available at UTSA during Graduate Program Days in February.
Representatives from each of UTSA's six colleges and many of the colleges' individual departments will be on hand to discuss the university's 34 master's and four doctoral degree programs.
Administrators and faculty will be available to answer questions one-on-one regarding program entrance requirements, degree plans, career possibilities, assistantships and other ways for financing graduate degree programs. All who wish to pursue a graduate degree are invited to take advantage of this free opportunity to learn more about professional, master's and doctoral programs at UTSA.
Sessions will be held at the Downtown Campus in the Frio Street Building Commons 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Feb. 20.
At the 1604 Campus, the session will be at the Sombrilla from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 27.

UTSA offers GRE, GMAT workshops this spring
(Jan. 16, 2002)--The UTSA Office of K-16 Initiatives and Honors Program will sponsor two series of workshops on preparing for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).
GRE Workshops:
The workshop comprises 12 hours of instruction taken over a six-week period on general test-taking, verbal and mathematics strategies. The course fee is $179, plus textbook cost. The first workshop series will meet 6-8 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning Jan. 22 and concluding Feb. 26. The second GRE series will meet 6-8 p.m. Thursdays, April 4-May 9.
GMAT Workshops:
The workshop consists of 18 hours of instruction taken over nine weeks on general test, verbal and mathematics strategies. The course fee is $279, plus textbook cost. The first GMAT series will meet 6-8 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 24-March 21. The second GMAT series will meet 6-8 p.m. Tuesdays, March 5-April 30.

UTSA community invited to enjoy Jan. 22 Spurs game
(Jan. 16, 2002)--UTSA President Ricardo Romo will be the first featured pre-game guest speaker of the San Antonio Spurs season at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Alamodome. The UTSA Community is invited to enjoy the Spurs vs. New Jersey Nets home game.
Invited as the first speaker of the basketball season, Romo will be followed by a 10-minute chalk talk by a member of the Spurs coaching staff.
Sponsored by Frost Bank and the San Antonio Spurs, ticket prices are buy one, get one free for $27.50. Seat locations will be on the club or lower levels on a best available basis.

Writer/painter/scholar from Penn State University to speak Jan. 25 on border literature
(Jan. 16, 2002)--UTSA's Language and Culture Working Group announces a talk by Santiago Vaquera-Vasquez of Penn State University.
A writer, painter, and scholar of literature on the U.S.-Mexico border, Vaquera-Vasquez will speak on the topic, "Limit, Divide, Gateway: Re-Thinking the Borderlands" at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25 in the John Peace Library Building Regents Room (4.03.12) on the 1604 Campus.

ITC seeks volunteers as tour guides, puppeteers and visitor greeters
(Jan. 16, 2002)--Applications from prospective volunteers are being accepted by the Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC) through Jan. 28. Volunteers are needed to serve as tour guides, puppeteers and visitor greeters. Individuals must speak English, and bilingual skills (especially Spanish, German or French) are a plus.
Training for new volunteers includes classroom sessions at the ITC from 9
a.m.-noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, Jan. 28-Feb. 25. On-the-job
training will follow the formal classes.
Those completing the training course become members of the Alliance, the organization
for ITC volunteers. Alliance members receive invitations to special ITC events
and exhibit openings, discounts at the ITC store and free parking during regular
business hours.

UTSA associate athletic director becomes University of Southern Colorado athletic director
(Jan. 16, 2002)--Chris Gage, senior associate athletic director at
UTSA for the past six years, has been named director of athletics at the University
of Southern Colorado in Pueblo, Colo. Gage will replace interim Director of
Athletics Bill Quayle, who has been in the position since August 1.
"I'm very pleased and excited. It's a tremendous opportunity to be a
part of the USC campus and the Pueblo community," said Gage, who will
join the USC staff on July 1. "I've enjoyed my years in San Antonio and
will miss the UTSA community. I appreciate the support the UTSA administration
has shown me and would like to thank all of those who have supported UTSA
athletics through the Roadrunner Club, season tickets and other marketing
efforts over the years. "

Engineering dean to speak at chamber of commerce luncheon
(Jan. 16, 2002)--The Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce Technology Council monthly luncheon will feature Zorica Pantic-Tanner, dean of the UTSA College of Engineering, on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at the Embassy Suites Hotel NW, 7750 Briaridge, at IH-10 and 410, off Callaghan. Pantic-Tanner will discuss the future of UTSA and the College of Engineering and efforts to become a tier-one flagship university.
Registration for the luncheon is at 11:30 a.m. with the luncheon and program beginning at noon. The cost is $30 per person for Chamber members and $45 per person for non-members. Corporate tables for 8 are available for $260 (members) and $390 (non-members).
