Chemistry department to present cancer chemotherapy seminar Jan. 28
(Jan. 25, 2002)--The Department of Chemistry will present a seminar at 5:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 28 in Humanities and Social Science Building Room 3.01.18 on the 1604 Campus. William Bauta, manager of process chemistry at Ilex Oncology, Inc. of San Antonio, will speak on "New Approaches to Cancer Chemotherapy."
The overview will include discussion of cancer drug development with particular attention to the development of the novel angiogenesis inhibitor NM3 and the nucleoside analog Clofarabine.

ITC seeks volunteers as tour guides, puppeteers and visitor greeters
(Jan. 25, 2002)--Applications from prospective volunteers are being accepted by the Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC) through Jan. 28. Volunteers are needed to serve as tour guides, puppeteers and visitor greeters. Individuals must speak English, and bilingual skills (especially Spanish, German or French) are a plus.
Training for new volunteers includes classroom sessions at the ITC from 9
a.m.-noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, Jan. 28-Feb. 25. On-the-job
training will follow the formal classes.
Those completing the training course become members of the Alliance, the organization
for ITC volunteers. Alliance members receive invitations to special ITC events
and exhibit openings, discounts at the ITC store and free parking during regular
business hours.

Vice President for Student Affairs to speak Jan. 29 in new lecture series
(Jan. 25, 2002)--UTSA Vice President for Student Affairs Rosalie Ambrosino will speak at noon Tuesday, Jan. 29 in the University Center Mesquite Room on the 1604 Campus as part of the Last Lecture Series.
Sponsored by the University Center and the United Methodist Student Movement, the lectures are based on the question, "If this were the last lecture you gave, what would your message be?" The first lecture in the series was given last semester by Blandina Cardenas, dean of the college of education and human development.

Student fee forum set for Jan. 30: 1604 Campus presentation will be simulcast at Downtown Campus
(Jan. 25, 2002)--UTSA students are invited to a student fee forum at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30 in Business Building Room 3.04.18 on the 1604 Campus. The presentation will be broadcast to Downtown Campus Frio Street Building Room 2.520.
Vice President for Business Affairs David Larson will conduct the forum. Larson will do a presentation on the current fee structure and then answer questions.

Symposium series on critical community issues opens Feb. 7 at Downtown Campus
(Jan. 25, 2002)--This spring, the Hispanic Research Center/Metropolitan Research and Policy Institute will sponsor three brown bag symposia on "Critical Community Issues." The series opens Thursday, Feb. 7 with "The Paradox of High Poverty and Low Crime: The Ecology of Homicide in San Antonio," presented by Michael Gilbert, faculty member in criminal justice.
The presentation will be 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in Buena Vista Street Building Room 1.338. Presentations, with topic to be announced, are also scheduled March 5 and April 3 at the same time and location.

UTSA plans graduate program information days
(Jan. 16, 2002)--Interested in pursuing a master's or doctoral degree? Learn more about the opportunities available at UTSA during Graduate Program Days in February.
Representatives from each of UTSA's six colleges and many of the colleges' individual departments will be on hand to discuss the university's 34 master's and four doctoral degree programs.
Administrators and faculty will be available to answer questions one-on-one regarding program entrance requirements, degree plans, career possibilities, assistantships and other ways for financing graduate degree programs. All who wish to pursue a graduate degree are invited to take advantage of this free opportunity to learn more about professional, master's and doctoral programs at UTSA.
Sessions will be held at the Downtown Campus in the Frio Street Building Commons 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Feb. 20.
At the 1604 Campus, the session will be at the Sombrilla from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 27.

Engineering dean to speak at chamber of commerce luncheon
(Jan. 16, 2002)--The Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce Technology Council monthly luncheon will feature Zorica Pantic-Tanner, dean of the UTSA College of Engineering, on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at the Embassy Suites Hotel NW, 7750 Briaridge, at IH-10 and 410, off Callaghan. Pantic-Tanner will discuss the future of UTSA and the College of Engineering and efforts to become a tier-one flagship university.
Registration for the luncheon is at 11:30 a.m. with the luncheon and program beginning at noon. The cost is $30 per person for Chamber members and $45 per person for non-members. Corporate tables for 8 are available for $260 (members) and $390 (non-members).
