"Diploma Dash" 5k run set for Feb. 23 at UTSA
(Jan. 16, 2002)--The UTSA Alumni Association will host the 18th Annual Diploma Dash/City Championship 5K Run and Fitness Walk on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002 at the UTSA Convocation Center. Check-in and registration will begin at 8 a.m., the race will begin at 9 a.m. and the presentation of awards will be at 10:15 a.m.
Continuing the tradition of supporting higher education and learning for all, proceeds are strictly used for scholarships. Open to runners and walkers, all event proceeds benefit general student scholarships and track athlete scholarships. Last year, the Alumni Association helped over 30 qualified students to realize their educational dreams while maintaining grade point averages of 3.5 or higher. The Alumni Association reports the graduation rate of scholars funded by their scholarships is 86 percent.
Since it began in 1984, the run has evolved into one of the premier running events in San Antonio, and in 1998 became the City Championship. Olympic runner and UTSA cross country standout Roger Soler ('85 B.S.) has had a big hand in making the run grow and develop over the years. Another UTSA runner, Liza Hunter-Galvan ('93 B.S.), has participated. Every year, local celebrities participate and have included George Gervin, former Mayor Howard Peak ('75 M.A.), the Spurs Coyote, Iggy the Iguana, and media personalities Randy Beamer, Ursula Pari and Alyce Ian.
Each participant will receive a long sleeved t-shirt and event sponsor products from BudCo of San Antonio, Hersheys, Right Images Printing, Roger Soler's Sports, San Antonio Express-News, Starbucks Coffee Company, Pepsi and Y100 Radio as well as a variety of prizes including cash, running shoes and medals.
The Corporate Team Challenge also provides an opportunity for local businesses to vie for bragging rights with a silver bowl as their prize. In addition, Roger Soler's sports will give $100 to anyone setting a new course record, which is currently 14:40 for men and 16:31 for women.
Early registration through Feb. 20 is $15 and race day registration is $20. A corporate team challenge team of up to five is $250. If you'd like to participate, but not run, why not volunteer?
For a registration form or more information, go to the Alumni Association Web site or call (210) 458-4133.
