New decor, new food served up at food courts

(Jan. 17, 2002)--Entertaining guru Martha Stewart might say, "It's a good thing," and those who patronize dining services at the 1604 and Downtown campuses would have to agree that there have been some changes to both the look of the facilities and the menu offerings.

At the Downtown Campus, the big news is the addition of a Subway sandwich shop. Workmen recently put the finishing touches on the familiar serving set-up and the popular Subway sandwiches, chips, beverages and cookies are now being served, as they are at the University Center food court on the 1604 Campus, according to Corinne Vela-Zapata, director of business services.

Hours of operation for Subway will run the same as for the Aramark food line, 10 a.m - 2 p.m. Monday-Friday. The Radisson Coffee Cafe will also continue to offer beverages, breakfast tacos and light snacks from 7-10 a.m. and 2-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Vela-Zapata added service hours may be expanded, if there is enough demand.

At 1604, the John Peace Library Building food court has been extensively remodeled to create a more accessible, inviting atmosphere. Most notable are the elimination of the orange wall and condiment bays that once "fronted" the food court selection area and the removal of the "end-zone" entry turnstyles. The cash registers are also now separated across the width of the room, a modification that helps to prevent check-out bottlenecks. Colorful signage directs patrons to Bene Pasta, Montague's Deli, Salad Garden, Burger King and Bene Pizzeria. The new court also features an arched entrance to the food line area.

"Much of the credit for our new food selections and look in the JPL food court are due to the collaborative efforts of Aramark and UTSA's business affairs office," said Vela-Zapata.

"We also have a new Aramark chef, Chef Daniel, who has many years of experience as an executive chef with Radisson hotels. He has new, fresh ideas and great creativity in food choices which bring an exciting variety to the UTSA campus," said Vela-Zapata.
