Hispanic group selects more interns from UTSA than other schools

(Jan. 2, 2002)--The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) selected more interns from the University of Texas at San Antonio to participate in their 2001 summer internship program than any other university on the mainland.

It was a record year for internships with HACU placing 628 students with federal agencies and private corporations nationwide. Sixteen of their placements were UTSA students matching the interests and requests of the organizations. Since 1999, 41 UTSA students have interned through HACU.

Participating in a HACU internship can significantly expand a student's career options. UTSA graduate Lorenzo Garza (’99 B.B.) served an internship with the Federal Reserve in Washington, D.C. during the summer of 1999. Following completion of graduate studies, he was hired by the Federal Reserve as a financial analyst in the Division of Banking Supervision and Regulation.

"I really can't say enough about internship programs like HACU and others. It's a great program that introduces people to D.C., opens doors and exposes them first-hand to the wealth of employment opportunities that are available here,” said Garza.

His responsibilities include identifying and measuring credit risk in the corporate and middle-market portfolios at the largest bank holding companies in the U.S. He also creates analytical reports for the chairman, board members, senior officers at the Federal Reserve and policymakers on Capitol Hill, among others. In addition, Garza implements cutting edge quantitative methods and financial risk systems aimed at pioneering sophisticated methods of portfolio management and establishing improved credit risk frameworks.

More than 2,000 students have registered to take advantage of opportunities and services offered through the UTSA Office of Career Services. "We strive to create the best networking opportunities possible for UTSA students and employers. With so many of our students being recognized by organizations such as HACU, it is a testament to the preparation students receive at our university,” remarked Sam Gonzales, director of career services.
