Institute for Economic Development moves temporarily to Kelly USA
(Jan. 4, 2002)--The UTSA Institute for Economic Development (IED) moved in late December from its long-time location in Cypress Tower to temporary, leased quarters at Kelly USA. The IED, which comprises 10 centers and programs with 90 UTSA employees serving over 22,000 clients annually, will remain at Kelly USA until the completion of a permanent facility at the UTSA Downtown Campus in about 18 months. Ground will be broken for the project adjacent to the Durango Building by early this February.
"UTSA has leased the space at Kelly USA for an initial period of three years," said assistant vice president for economic development Robert McKinley. Although the Institute for Economic Development will be there only about half that time, McKinley said UTSA will continue to use the space as classrooms, perhaps, or to house other outreach or support functions.
"In addition to the space opportunities provided for UTSA, this arrangement is beneficial to helping the southwest part of the city to maintain economic stability and growth following the closure of Kelly Air Force Base," said McKinley. "The Kelly redevelopment effort has been successful at getting large companies to come in, such as Boeing and Lockheed. But small businesses are also needed to create a balanced and vibrant commercial park environment. So, the traffic from our San Antonio small business clients visiting the UTSA offices here will contribute to activity at Kelly," McKinley explained.
"The services offered through the Institute for Economic Development support small business development in San Antonio and South Texas, as well as the fostering of international trade ventures that could mean even more extensive utilization of the space at Kelly USA," McKinley added.
The IED's new temporary quarters are on the second floor of the 145 Duncan Building, located to the right immediately inside the main entrance to Kelly USA from Gen. Hudnell Boulevard. There are no manned checkpoints at the entrances, and the 145 Duncan Building is readily identifiable by two vintage aircraft displayed on either side of it. All UTSA telephone extensions for the centers remain the same.
