(Jan. 18, 2002)--The UTSA Department of Art will present an exhibit of photography featuring five Latin American artists Jan. 15- Feb. 15 at the Arts Building Art Gallery on the 1604 Campus. Admission is free and open to the public.

Curated by Fernando Castro, curator of photography at the Sicardi Gallery in Houston, the exhibit will feature work by Ana Tiscornia, Anamaria McCarthy, Lissie Habie, Laura Barron and Adriana Calatayud.

Tiscornia is an Uruguayan artist who lives and works in New York. Her portraits allude to "desaparecidos," or people who disappeared during Uruguay's military era. Pictures of unnamed people are placed under semi-translucent glass that does not allow the viewer to see clear images of the subjects, revealing the impossibility of seeing clearly and the impossibility of knowing real identities.

McCarthy, a Peruvian photographer, explores two very important sides of a woman's life -- maternity and aging. A photographic series about her grandmother evokes a mixture of helplessness and vague eroticism.

Habie, a Guatemalan photographer, addresses universal issues such as birth, knowledge, sin and injury with images of women and children.

Barron is a Mexican artist who lives and works in Mexico City. Her work concentrates on surrealistic landscapes depicting the curves of earth.

Calatayud, a Mexican artist, turns the body into a canvas. Her images concentrate on the human form with the addition of patterns, shapes and words that have been projected or drawn onto the skin.

Art Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Friday; and 2-4 p.m., Sunday. For more information, call Jasmin Khair at (210) 458-4550.
