Mexican American school board group holds conference at UTSA

(Jan. 9, 2002)--The Mexican American School Board Members Association will conduct its fourth annual state conference Jan. 10-12 at the UTSA Downtown Campus in the Buena Vista Street Building. "Hispanic Educational Excellence: Education is our Solution" is the theme for the statewide conference of school board members, co-sponsored by the UTSA Office of K-16 Initiatives and Honors Program and the Mexican American School Board Members Association (MASBA).

Information sessions and seminars at the conference will include these and other topics: building stronger communities through K-16 initiatives, writing strategies for bilingual students, higher education preparation, technology partnerships, empowering teachers and students via the Advanced Placement Initiative, the role of education service centers in helping school districts reach their goals, identifying educational best practices, board consensus building, parental involvement in the Hispanic community, the permanent impact of testing on children and magnet school success stories.

Headquartered in San Antonio, MASBA's mission is to help attain educational and cultural needs and opportunities in the public school system for Mexican Americans and other historically underserved or disadvantaged students. MASBA's activities comprise leadership development, public policy analysis, political awareness, parental education and involvement and community empowerment.

While the conference is geared to school board members, a limited number of spaces are available to the public. For more information, contact Richard Garza at (210) 225-0001 or the UTSA Office of K-16 Initiatives and Honors Program at (210) 458-2769.
