'Monochrome, Mostly' exhibit opens at UTSA Satellite Space

(Jan. 28, 2002)--The UTSA Department of Art and Art History is hosting "Monochrome, Mostly," an exhibit of monochrome paintings and sculptures by twelve artists through Feb. 10 at the UTSA Satellite Space at the Blue Star Arts Complex, 115 Blue Star (S. Alamo and Probandt).

Sean Horton, graduate student and exhibit curator, has selected works by Scott Barber, Dallas; Andrew Bennett, Dallas; Mark Cole, New York; Curtis Fairman, Las Vegas; Amanda Farrar, Las Vegas; Rebecca Holland, San Antonio; C. Sean Horton, Dallas; Ryan James, Denton; David Maxwell, Carrolton; Jesse Meraz, Fort Worth; Colin O’Con, New York and Meghan Stutts, Florence, Italy.

According to Horton, the content of this work reflects the association of a monochromatic color scheme with spirituality and infinity. The objective of the work is to reveal only the essential qualities of paint and color, eliminating any unnecessary additives such as representation of external reference.

At the same time, the wall-mounted works reveal color through their use of everyday materials such as Scotch tape, candy, mud, glitter, dish scrubbers and birthday candles. Some works speak to the ephemeral nature of the art experience, while others recall memories of childhood friends or movies.

Gallery hours are 12-6 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the UTSA Satellite Space at (210) 212-7146.
