Massachusetts diversity education expert to speak Feb. 8
(Jan. 29, 2002)--Sonia Nieto, professor of education at the University of Massachusetts, will present "Teaching and Diversity in Today's Schools" from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Feb. 8 on the 1604 Campus in the John Peace Library Building Assembly Room.
Her talk, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by the Division of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, the UTSA College of Education and Human Development and ESCALA Title VII Project.
An educator for 35 years, Nieto has taught students at all levels from elementary grades through graduate school. Her research focuses on multicultural education, the education of Latinos, immigrants, and other culturally and linguistically diverse students, and Puerto Rican children's literature.
Her books include "Affirming Diversity: The Sociopolitical Context of
Multicultural Education" (3rd ed., 2000), "The Light in Their Eyes:
Creating Multicultural Learning Communities" (1999) and "Puerto
Rican Students in U.S. Schools" (2000).
