UTSA sophomore Sara M. Gonzales
'Scholarship car wash' rescheduled for Feb. 2
(Jan. 28, 2002)--The fund-raiser car wash Sara M. Gonzales planned for Jan. 18 was canceled due to cold weather and slow business. But the event is now scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 2 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Gonzales is still looking for volunteers to help out this Saturday at the Carwash Express, 8935 Wurzbach.
UTSA sophomore Sara M. Gonzales decided last summer to help out her
fellow sophomores when she organized a car wash to raise money for UTSA scholarships.
Car washes are a staple fund raising activity, but not every activity benefiting
from them is as unique as the Sara M. Gonzales Sophomore Scholarship.
Gonzales created the $1,000 scholarship fund, with half being awarded fall
2001 and the other half spring 2002. The major requirement for the recipients
is that they be sophomores.
Gonzales, a first-generation college student, explained that, "I felt that a lot of scholarships are given to first time freshman and students who have an established major. There aren't enough scholarships, or maybe not any scholarships, that target sophomore students. There is nothing greater than sharing with your peers the excitement of being a scholarship recipient."
And Gonzales should know. She is the recipient of scholarships from the San Antonio Education Partnership, EG&G Management Services/UTSA, the ACE Scholarship Program and the World Affairs Council of San Antonio.
"I wanted to give someone else the opportunity to continue with their
education," said Gonzales.
Gonzales, a Harlandale High School graduate, is very active in campus life
at UTSA. She is sophomore representative to the Student Government Association
and a former chair of the UTSA Downtown Student Government Ad Hoc Committee.
If you are interested in donating to the scholarship or volunteering to wash cars, contact Gonzales at (210) 458-2816, UTSA Downtown Campus Durango Building Room 1.302 (Student Activities Office), at (210) 264-4247 or by e-mail.
