UTSA's
2001 United Way campaign raises over $113,000
(Jan. 22, 2002)--Thanks to the efforts of UTSA's Tri-Campus community, contributions to the 2002 United Way State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC) surpassed $113,000. The money raised goes to help fund 98 United Way funded agencies that provide crucial social services and community programs for Bexar County residents.
Contributors were given the option of distributing a set amount to an agency of their choice or having several locally funded agencies divide up the set among themselves to help out those in need.
Employees also had the option of having a deduction taken out of their paycheck, with the first amount starting in January.
In October, several United Way funded agency representatives participated in an agency fair on the 1604 Campus in order to give employees the opportunity to see who benefits from United Way local donations. Among those in attendance were CHIP, Any Baby Can of San Antonio, American Heart Association, Brighton School, Inc., Community Health Charities, Alzheimer's Association, Prevent Blindness of Texas and National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.
Last year UTSA received two state awards for its high level of United Way participation. UTSA recorded the largest per capita giving in the state and had the largest increase in numbers of donations among all components of the UT System. The percent of UTSA enployees participating in United Way increased from 36 to 46 percent during last year's campaign.
Additionally, United Way officals say that 126 UTSA employees were directly assisted by one of the 98 agencies supported by United Way.
UTSA's efforts helped the United Way of Bexar County raise over $38 million dollars despite the tragic events of Sept. 11. Many charitable organizations found themselves asking more of the public sector after many of the private and corporate donations were directed to help out the World Trade Center disaster victims and families.
