Rowdy Roadrunner with UTSACard
Even Rowdy has a UTSACard! The card is your ticket to fare-free VIA service
on the Rowdy Express, as well as being your official university ID and services-access
debit card. The UTSACard can also be used by authorized faculty and staff for
electronic admission into buildings and offices. Business Services reminds all
employees who haven't yet done so to trade in their old university IDs for a UTSACard.

Business services announces policy changes, operations reminders

(Jan. 29, 2002)--As the Tri-Campus community moves forward into the spring semester, Director of Business Services Corinne Vela-Zapata announces some policy changes and reminders related to several areas of operations.

Catering and Food Preparation Policy

To ensure uniform safety standards in the preparation and serving of food products on the Tri-Campuses, the UTSA Budget Council has adopted the following:

1. One of the university's approved caterers must be used for any on-campus event that:
-- is open to individuals who are not students, faculty or staff members;
-- requires preparing and serving food in one of the approved food-service dining spaces; and
-- requires use of any of the UTSA-owned kitchens for preparation of the food.

2. The preparation and serving of food by offices, departments and student organizations is permitted under the following circumstances:
-- the food is served to a limited and defined market of UTSA students, faculty or staff;
-- the food is assembled on-site but is not cooked on site;
-- pot luck luncheons/dinners, consisting of food prepared and cooked at individuals' homes, are permitted for offices with the consent of all members of the office staff who participate; and
-- prepared baked goods from a commercial kitchen, such as doughnuts and pastries, may be served to a limited and defined market consisting of UTSA students, faculty and staff.

NOTE: Perishable or raw foods that could potentially spoil, such as eggs or meat, may be cooked on-site and then used to make a food dish only for fundraising purposes, providing the responsible department/individual does so under the supervision of the San Antonio Health Department. A permit and an inspection of the food preparation process and facility may be required.

Facility-specific food policies

Individual campus facilities may also establish policies and procedures concerning what rooms may be used for events at which food will be prepared and/or served, including the type of activity, the kinds of foods may be served and at what times during the day foods may be served. Questions concerning serving of food in specific facilities should be directed to the staff responsible for making reservations in each facility.

UTSACard

Faculty and staff who have not yet traded in their original or older university ID cards for a UTSACard are asked to do so as soon as possible.

This multipurpose identification and services-access card is now used by all students, and faculty and staff who have joined the university since 1998. The card can be used with a debit account to purchase food, photocopying and bookstore items. It is also used to gain access to some buildings and offices.

Building access

The UTSACard may be used for all electronic entry on any campus, allowing ready access to authorized faculty and staff who have offices or teach at multiple locations.

Currently at the Downtown Campus, the Frio Street and Buena Vista Street buildings' exterior doors are activated for electronic entry, with the Durango Building set to come online in the next few weeks.

At the 1604 Campus, the Diebold access readers at Chisholm Hall and Activity Center are currently activated for card access, with the John Peace Library Building and Business Building soon to follow.

Applying for access to building exterior doors requires a University Police Access Request Form, available on line through Outlook under UTSA forms. Faculty and staff requiring access should notify their department for authorization and submission of the form.

Interior access

The UTSACard can also be used for interior door access, and many doors at the Downtown Campus feature this application. The card also operates the 97 interior door stand-alone system Locknetics locksets currently in use on the 1604 and Downtown campuses.

VIA Rowdy Express bus service

The UTSACard is also used for fare-free rides on the VIA Rowdy Express for faculty, staff and students.

To obtain your UTSACard, visit the card office on either the 1604 or Downtown campuses. For card office hours and locations go to the UTSACard Web page.

Bookstore discounts

Full-time faculty and staff are eligible for a 20 percent courtesy discount on bookstores purchases, except for textbooks.
