UTSA, South Texas Community College sign transfer agreement

(Jan. 18, 2002)--Completing a bachelor's degree at the University of Texas at San Antonio will become easier for students who transfer from South Texas Community College (STCC) in McAllen, thanks to an agreement announced Jan. 18.

In ceremonies held at the community college, STCC President Shirley Reed and UTSA President Ricardo Romo signed a proclamation formalizing a transfer student articulation agreement between the two institutions. The agreement will enable STCC students who follow an approved, two-year undergraduate curriculum at STCC to automatically transfer all credits to UTSA, where their degrees would be completed.

"A significant number of students from the Rio Grande Valley enroll in UTSA each year," said Romo. "Having this 2+2 year program in place for transfer students from South Texas Community College will no doubt encourage even more students from the area to continue their higher education by completing four-year degrees at UTSA."

There are currently about 30 transfer students from STCC pursuing four-year degrees at UTSA. The transfer articulation agreement becomes effective this fall with the 2002-2003 academic year.

Founded just over eight years ago, STCC now offers 50 associate degrees and certificate programs and serves over 12,000 students living in the Rio Grande Valley.

UTSA, also one of the state's fastest growing universities, offers 51 undergraduate degree programs, 34 master's degrees and four doctoral programs, with more than a dozen other degree programs pending approval.
