UTSA-based mentoring program honors energy executive

(Jan. 10, 2002)--Valero Energy CEO Bill Greehey will be honored for his commitment and service to San Antonio's youth at a Jan. 15 mentor recognition luncheon in the Texas Ballroom of the Adam's Mark Hotel.

Hosted by the San Antonio: Making Mentoring A Partnership (SA: MMAP) program based at UTSA, the luncheon is part of the local observance of the inaugural National Mentoring Month (January 2002), organized by the National Mentoring Partnership. The month will be marked nationally through the issuing of a commemorative stamp, "Mentoring a Child," on Thursday, Jan. 10.

Tickets for the local mentor recognition luncheon are $35 each or $350 for corporate tables of 10. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the UTSA special events office at (210) 458-2764. The deadline for reservations is Jan. 11. Payment can be made in advance via check or credit card or at the door.

San Antonio: Making Mentoring A Partnership connects mentors from business, higher education and professional organizations with students from Bexar County schools. The nationally acclaimed mentoring effort was established locally by the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, which last year transferred administration of the project to the UTSA Office of K-16 Initiatives and Honors Program.

Never has there been a greater need for positive role models to share their experiences with children. And there's never been a better time to volunteer. To learn more about local mentoring opportunities, call the UTSA San Antonio: Making Mentoring A Partnership Program at (210) 458-2766.

Also during January, the professional staff and mentor partners of SA: MMAP will take part in the regional Mentor Texas! Training and Development Workshop, which will be in San Antonio Jan. 24-25 at the Radisson Hotel Downtown-Market Square.

The workshops are free and open to those who currently are mentors or to those who aspire to be, including Texas-based youth mentoring program staff, volunteers and practitioners. Hours for the workshop are 9 a.m. -4 p.m. each day. Space is limited, and advance registration by Jan. 17 is requested.

To register to attend the event call Mentor Texas! toll-free at (877) 877-6753.

Mentor TEXAS! is a training and technical assistance partnership of the Texas Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service Governor's Mentoring Initiative and the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory.
