UTSA
women's basketball team faces McNeese State tonight
(Jan. 14, 2002)--UTSA women's basketball will put its league-leading defense
to the test as they face McNeese State tonight at 7 p.m. in the Convocation
Center on the UTSA 1604 Campus. The Roadrunners are currently tied for first
place with Stephen F. Austin and UT-Arlington, all sitting atop the Southland
Conference with 5-1 records.
UTSA has held its last three opponents to an average of 43 points per game.
The Roadrunners, who ranked second in the nation in scoring defense last season
at 54.6 points per game, have held six teams below 50 points and are allowing
45.5 points per game in Southland Conference play.
A win would be the Roadrunners fourth straight and would put UTSA at 6-1 in SLC play for the first time in school history. The Roadrunners have been limited by a rash of injuries during the pre-season. UTSA's top returning scorer, Julie Rampley, is out for the year with a knee injury. Rampley led UTSA in six offensive categories last season and had been picked as a first-team preseason all-SLC pick this year
The team had one of its most productive offensive games of the season last
Monday in a 60-46 win over Southeastern Louisiana.
UTSA had nine different players score as the bench produced 28 of the 'Runners
60 points. Sophomore forward Nikki Hendrix connected on 7 of 15 from
the field for 16 points. Senior guard Latifa Northern 11 points and
nine rebounds. Senior guard Katrina Dorsey came off the bench for six
points, eight rebounds and five assists.
