UTSA hosts engineering, science conference for Hispanic youth

(July 26, 2002)--More than 1,600 middle and high school students representing San Antonio, Laredo and Lubbock participated in the Fourth Annual Engineering and Science Extravaganza July 26 in the UTSA Convocation Center on the 1604 Campus. Hosted by the student chapter of the Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists (MAES), students had the opportunity to conduct hands-on science experiments and experience more than 50 interactive presentations.

The conference highlights the Promotion and Awareness of Careers in Engineering and Science (PACES) program and is designed to increase the number of Hispanic students entering the fields of science, engineering and technology. Student members who volunteer as tutors at local elementary and middle schools in reading, math and science also assist in the extravaganza.

"We wanted to get students excited about science and engineering, and show Hispanic students that there are people just like them studying at a university," said Ricardo Ramirez, MAES student adviser.

Sponsors of the event include Alamo Workforce Development, MAES International Chapter, SBC Communications, Southwest Research Institute, San Antonio Water Systems, Coyle Engineering and EG&G.
