official attends international women's seminar
(July 17, 2002)--Margaret Anderson, executive director of the institutional
diversity office at the University of Texas at San Antonio, was one of 40 distinguished
women leaders selected to attend the recent "Women and Power: Leadership
in a New World" seminar hosted by the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard
University. The pilot program provided a forum for the international participants to discuss relevant issues affecting the global environment with Harvard faculty members. Participants were selected from eight countries representing the non-profit, private and public sectors. Applicants were chosen based on their current level of responsibility and their potential for future contribution to their community and their organization.
Among the faculty members involved were eminent former public officials, educators and guest speakers in the areas of leadership, communications, public policy and negotiations. The list included Swanee Hunt, former U.S. Ambassador to Austria, and David Gergen, former White House adviser to Presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Clinton. Gergen is now director of the Kennedy School's Center for Public Leadership.
"It was fascinating to see how all three sectors, non-profit, private and public, were working to improve quality of life issues," said Anderson. "We found that no matter what level of success a person achieves, they still face similar problems."
