Institute of Texan Cultures presents "Tornadoes: Into the Storm"
(July 8, 2002)--The Institute of Texan Cultures exhibit "Tornadoes: Into the Storm" features photos of the 1997 Jarrell tornado and its aftermath, and was produced by Rockdale ISD students. On display from July 13-Aug.11 in the ITC's Lower Gallery, the exhibit was designed by the students in honor of their neighbors who were affected by the storm, and to educate the public about tornadoes.
The exhibit displays before and after pictures of towns struck by tornadoes, scientific explanations of tornado formation, a history of tornadoes, survival safety tips and a kiosk featuring tornado footage.
Rockdale ISD received a $750,000 grant from the Texas Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund Board in August 2000 to increase science activities for students. As part of this grant, the students created the exhibit. Donations from 3COM, Alcoa and IBM, as well as community fund-raisers, helped defray additional expenses. Through financial aid and student determination, the exhibit provides an authentic learning experience facilitated through technology.
