Donors needed at UTSA June 18-19 blood drive

(June 17, 2002)--UTSA Student Health Services, in cooperation with the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center, will sponsor a blood drive 11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday, June 18-19, in the Business Building University Room (2.06.04).

Students, faculty, staff and the general public are encouraged to participate in the UTSA blood drive. Donors must be 17 years of age or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in good general health. Those with appointments can be finished in approximately one hour. The appointment system was designed to facilitate faster service for those with a limited amount of time available for donating.

The South Texas blood supply has dropped steadily over the past week, with projections for the current week looking alarmingly low. Summer vacations, high temperatures and new donor restrictions have reduced the number of donations in June. With less than one day's supply of blood available, donors are urged to give as soon as possible due to the perishability of blood. Red blood cells last only 42 days, while platelets, which control bleeding, last only five days.

Donations can also be made without an appointment. All donors are requested to bring a photo ID.

For more information or to make an appointment to donate blood, contact Margaret Black at (210) 458-4142.
