UTSA hires new energy manager to oversee tri-campuses

(June 18, 2002)--Dagoberto Rodriguez has been named energy manager at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Rodriguez will be responsible for implementing and overseeing the energy management and operating plan for UTSA's tri-campuses, as required by state government and the UT System.

He will also launch conservation measures recommended by a UT System Energy Utility Task Force report. Designed to save system components more than $90 million over the next 10 to15 years, these measures helped UTSA to save over $300,000 during their first year of use.

Rodriguez' cost-saving measures include installing motion detectors in buildings to turn off lights when rooms are vacant, as is already done manually in many campus buildings. He would also like to see a designated overnight parking lot so overhead lighting is not used in parking lots that contain only a few vehicles.

Prior to assuming this position, Rodriguez worked five years in the UTSA facilities services office while completing his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at the university. He also served seven years in the U.S. Navy, where he developed his knowledge on the mechanics and operations of air-conditioning systems.

"I look forward to working with everyone in the Tri-Campus community and to helping the university in its goal of conserving energy and other resources over the next decade," said Rodriguez.
