Romo selects UTSA's first Presidential Fellow

(June 13, 2002)--University of Texas at San Antonio President Ricardo Romo announced today the appointment of Richard Lewis as a Presidential Fellow in the Office of the President. A new honor at UTSA, a Presidential Fellow is selected to assist the president in official university duties. The new position begins June 17.

Lewis, an associate professor of sociology, earned the competitive honor following an extensive search. An expert in recruitment and diversity issues, he teaches and consults in the areas of public administration, social sciences and diversity management.

"I am truly pleased that I was able to find an individual with the enthusiasm and expertise that are required of this position," Romo said. "Richard Lewis has an outstanding history of teaching, scholarship and service to our university community, and this will serve him well as he works in the president's office."

As a presidential fellow, Lewis will manage special projects for the president, serve on the budget and administrative planning councils and work closely with academic affairs as the university makes the transition to a Doctoral Intensive Institution.

Currently serving as associate dean in the College of Liberal and Fine Arts, Lewis is the founder and president of Round Top Consulting Associates, a social science research and seminar facilitation company.

"I am very excited about this professional opportunity," Lewis said. "I look forward to learning more about organizational operations at UTSA and working with the university community on important academic and administrative issues."

Lewis headed the City of San Antonio's recruitment and selection efforts from 1985 to 1988. He has taught at Texas A&M University, St. Philip's College and Our Lady of the Lake University.

Regarding civic involvement, Lewis has been a board member of the United Way Board of Directors and the Live Oak Economic Development Corporation, and has served on the VIA Metropolitan Transit Authority Board of Trustees and the Bexar County Housing Authority.

He received his undergraduate degree from Texas Tech University in 1976, and earned master's and doctoral degrees in sociology from Texas A&M University in 1978 and 1981, respectively.
