Business card with new UTSA logo
UTSA logo to get new streamlined look
(June 21, 2002)--A design feature on current UTSA business cards and letterhead will soon fade into history as the university streamlines its image to center on two design features -- the easily recognizable "UTSA" and "The University of Texas at San Antonio." In use since the mid 1990s, the "Sombrilla" logo will no longer be a part of the institution's image effective as soon as the on-line print ordering system can be changed.
"As we move toward becoming a premier institution of higher education in Texas, it is important that we prominently use the four-letter word mark for our institution," said UTSA President Ricardo Romo. "When I meet with individuals in the community, they are very aware of what UTSA means to our region and our state."
Although the "Sombrilla" logo will no longer be included in publications and university web pages, there are uses of the logo that will remain, such as on certain signs and permanent architectural features. The university has made no plans to eliminate its use entirely, although new publications and Web pages should reflect the new look.
It is expected that the new stationery system should be in place within four to five weeks, and offices are requested to reorder material only as the need arises, not simply to get cards with the new look. Individuals with questions about the change should contact the Office of University Publications for more details.
"As we approach the new fiscal year and heightened efforts to increase the university's visibility, we believe this is an optimal time to make this change, said David Gabler, assistant vice president for university communications. "I also believe 'UTSA' represents the three campuses better than the 'Sombrilla' logo, which was designed prior to the existence of UTSA's Downtown Campus on Frio Street."
