(June 17, 2002)--Brad Parrott has been named associate athletics director for external affairs at the University of Texas at San Antonio it was announced by Director of Athletics Lynn Hickey. In his new position, Parrott is responsible for all UTSA athletics department sales and promotions, including season tickets, sponsorships and development.
Parrott joined the athletics department last September as the director of community relations and promotions. In that position, he helped implement community outreach programs involving Roadrunner coaches and players. Members of the department visited more than 5,000 elementary and middle school students, and addressed more than 1,000 youth league coaches. These and other efforts helped increase UTSA's basketball attendance by more than 25 percent last season.
"The athletics department at any university is its marquee," Parrott said. "It's the part of the university that everyone sees most often on television and reads about in the newspaper. It's our responsibility to make sure that UTSA and its athletics department are more visible in the community."
Parrott came to UTSA last year after spending the previous 23 years with SBC Corporation. His last assignment was area vice president for external affairs in San Antonio where he was responsible for community and government relations throughout South Texas. Prior to that he worked in a variety of positions with SBC, including corporate communications, economic development, advertising, investor relations and consumer affairs.
"UTSA athletics is important to the economic growth of San Antonio. As the host school for NCAA Final Four and basketball regional tournaments, we help focus positive national attention on our community. We also hope to be an integral part of the Pan American Games in 2007, hosting the athletes' village, and track and field events," Parrott said. "We've proven that we can help host major athletics events. It's my job now to make some of those major events our own. We want more and more San Antonians wearing blue and orange, and cheering for their hometown Roadrunners."
A former sports reporter for the Oklahoma City Times, Parrott has spent much of the past 30-plus years devoting his free time to organizing and promoting athletics organizations and events. At SBC he had been involved with UTSA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Alamo Bowl, San Antonio Spurs, Olympic Sports Festival, PGA Championship, National AAU Men's Basketball Championship, Smithson Valley High Athletic Booster Club and other athletics activities.
A native of Oklahoma, Parrott is a 1975 graduate of Central State University in Edmond, with a bachelor's degree in journalism.
