(March 11, 2002)--The University of Texas at San Antonio Department of Art and Art History is sponsoring two solo exhibitions, "Carne Vale" by Victoria Reynolds and "Clown Stains" by Jeffrey Vallance, through March 24 at the UTSA Satellite Space at the Blue Star Arts Complex, 115 Blue Star (S. Alamo and Probandt).

Reynolds and Vallance recently returned to the United States from teaching positions at the University of Sweden and are visiting artists at UTSA. Widely admired for their distinct and provocative bodies of work, the artists have exhibited nationally and internationally.

Reynolds, a painter, is known for her baroque and highly detailed depictions of meat (including lamb, reindeer, cow, pork, and lunchmeat) with ornate frames that echo the veining and marbling of her subject matter. Her work was recently included in the exhibition "Diabolical Beauty" at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum in California.

Vallance, whose work is conceptual and performance-oriented, explores the humor in everyday life in projects ranging from a meeting with the King of Tonga to the creation of his own Nixon Museum. For his Satellite Space exhibition, he has enlisted a group of San Antonio-based clowns. The clowns will remove their makeup on cloth handkerchiefs, which will appear like abstract clown portraits.

The UTSA Satellite Space hours are 12-6 p.m. Friday-Sunday. For more information contact Fran Colpitt at (210) 458-4836.
