UTSA
debaters place fourth in national championship
(March 5, 2002)--The Roadrunner debaters did well at the Junior National Debate Championship Tournament held in Towson, Md. last weekend, according to Skip Eno, UTSA director of forensics. Jeremy Stevens, senior in computer science, and Marty Golando, junior in political science, battled through nine very competitive debate rounds to finish fourth in a field of sixty teams from across the country.
The tournament pits the best junior-level teams, those within their first two years of college debate, against one another in a three-day competition. Stevens and Golando defeated teams from Marist College, University of Vermont, University of West Virginia, Wake Forest, Capital University and Catholic University.
"Stevens won the sixth place speaker award in a field of 120 very good debaters," said Eno. In their final debate round, Stevens and Golando lost on a 2-1 decision to California State University-Long Beach.
In the second week in March, Golando will partner with Terrell Baptiste, Houston freshman, in another major national tournament in Kansas City, Mo.
The final outing for the season will be in the first week of April. Two UTSA Teams will compete in the Cross Examination Debate Association's Open National Championship hosted by California State University-Fullerton. This tournament will feature nearly two hundred of the top debate teams in the country.
