Roadrunner debaters place fourth in Kansas tourney

(March 25, 2002)--UTSA debaters continued their winning trend March 16-18 in a tournament hosted by Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kan., a Kansas City suburb. Marty Golando, a Chicago senior, and Terrell Baptiste, a Houston freshman, placed fourth among 19 teams from seven states including Iowa, Ohio, Wisconsin, Missouri, Utah, Kansas and Texas.

UTSA defeated debate teams from the University of Northern Iowa, Southern Utah University, UT Dallas, University of Missouri and Southwest Missouri State. Golando placed tenth among thirty-eight competitors. The tournament served as a warm up for Golando and Baptiste as they prepare to debate at the Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA) National Championship Tournament the first week in April at California State University, Fullerton.

Another Roadrunner debate team, Kate Richey, junior, and Jeremy Stevens, senior, will also represent UTSA at the CEDA competition.

Skip Eno, UTSA director of debate, says, "The team members hope to improve their final rankings at the national championship tournament in California."

The UTSA debate program is currently ranked 80th in the nation among more than three hundred colleges and universities.
