UTSA development office announces executive director, officers

(March 4, 2002)--Following a national search, UTSA has named native Texan Sonia Gutierrez Konradi as executive director of development. An electrical engineer who holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at Austin and a master's from the University of California, Berkeley, Konradi assumed her duties at UTSA March 1, according to UTSA Vice President for Administration/Interim Vice President for University Advancement Gerard Barloco.

Since 1996, Konradi had been director of corporate relations for the College of Engineering at UT-Austin, where she managed relationships and projects associated with more than 200 high-tech and petrochemical corporations that contribute $20 million annually to the college. Her personal fund-raising efforts netted the college another $2 million in grants, yearly.

Throughout the 1990s, Konradi also directed UT-Austin's equal opportunity program for minority students in engineering, overseeing outreach, recruitment, advising, counseling and student success programs. Prior to joining UT-Austin, she spent six years as a hardware and custom-device design engineer for AT&T Bell Laboratories in Naperville, Ill. As an undergraduate, she also garnered industry experience with IBM and Hewlett-Packard.

"Sonia Konradi has the ideal combination of expertise and experience required by UTSA at this pivotal time in our growth to move our development function to the next level-- an essential step in our mission to attain flagship status in research and as a top-tier educational institution for underserved groups in San Antonio and South Texas," said Barloco.

Added Konradi, "I am very excited about joining the UTSA team and bringing my experiences and skills to provide a top-quality education for our students. I am looking forward to working with our corporate friends, alumni and donors, as well as our faculty and staff, as we partner to create new and exciting initiatives which will promote UTSA as the institution of choice."

Konradi will oversee a growing UTSA development staff, which now includes a development officer for five of the university's six colleges. The most recent additions are Paul W. Carter associate director of development for the College of Engineering, and Tomas Larralde, associate director of development for the College of Education and Human Development.

Larralde was most recently special assistant to UTSA President Ricardo Romo before assuming his new fund-raising and development duties.

Carter brings to UTSA more than 20 years of fund-raising experience and leadership for three of the nation's largest nonprofit organizations--the American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America and the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Most recently, he served as CEO for the American Red Cross in South Carolina, where he launched a $9.2 million campaign and revised management strategies. He also spent more than two years based In Washington, D.C. in the national development department for the Red Cross. He completed a B.S. in sociology at UT-Tyler.

New appointees also include Mary Elizabeth "Bette" Simpson, associate director of development for major gifts, and Bettie Karter, assistant director of development for annual giving.

Simpson, whose background comprises extensive experience in fundraising for higher education projects and institutions, previously was dean of institutional advancement and executive director of the college foundation for the Technical College of the Lowcountry in Beaufort, S.C.

She also served during1992-94 as development director for the Maryland-based Chesapeake Bay Foundation and from 1989-1992, was vice president for institutional planning and advancement and director of development for New Community College of Baltimore.

A former executive director of the Vermont Higher Education Council and a successful realtor and volunteer community fundraiser, Simpson earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees in English at the University of Rhode Island, where she later served as an admissions officer, director of community centers and part-time English instructor.

Karter, who completed a bachelor's degree in humanities at UTSA, has served the university in many capacities over the past 27 years, working both in development, as manager of external relations information systems, and as a top assistant to the former dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and to the interim dean of the College of Engineering. She is also an active member of the Alumni Association, whose members support the annual fund she oversees.
