Serigraphs by Richard Duardo: "Jimi," "SimonClockwork," "Madonna" and "Frankie."
Internationally acclaimed Latino artist to speak at UTSA March 28
(March 20, 2002)--Graphic artist and printmaker Richard Duardo will
speak on "Road to Aztlan" at 6 p.m. March 28 at the UTSA Downtown
Campus in Buena Vista Street Building Room 1.325.
A major presence in the Los Angeles art community for more than 25 years,
Duardo has produced a prolific body of work, particularly serigraph prints
made using a silk-screening process. Since completing a degree in graphic
design at UCLA, he has had museum shows in Japan, New York and Los Angeles.
The National Endowment for the Arts also selected his original work to be
part of a traveling exhibit.
A past recipient of the California Arts Commission Artist of the Year Award, Duardo has published through his various studios the work of more than 450 artists, now archived by the University of California, Santa Barbara's Department of Chicano Studies.
His pieces are included in notable collections, such as that of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and in the private collections of Oscar De La Hoya, Whoopi Goldberg, Herbie Hancock, Selma Hayak, Madonna, EMI Records, Hard Rock Cafe-Los Angeles and San Francisco, MTV, Virgin Records and Warner Brothers.
Duardo's contributions to printmaking are considered so significant that
the research library at Stanford University is now acquiring the R.S. Duardo
Archive. The archive comprises letters, papers and 350 graphics reflecting
the history of late 20th-Century printmaking on the West Coast.
As director of the studio Modern Multiples Inc., Duardo and his six associates
are committed to releasing 56 new publications by 27 different artists, in
addition to six Duardo original graphics.
Duardo's lecture at UTSA is free and open to the public. It is jointly sponsored by the offices of the university president and the vice provost for the Downtown Campus. For more information, call (210) 458-2700.
