UTSA hosts NCAA Women's Final Four basketball

(March 29, 2002)--As the only Division I institution in San Antonio, the University of Texas at San Antonio is pleased to host the 2002 NCAA Women's Final Four. The basketball games take place March 29 and 31.

Since the 1997 NCAA Men's Midwest Regional initiated March Madness in San Antonio, UTSA has been an essential partner in winning subsequent NCAA bids to include the 1998 Men's Final Four, 2001 Men's Midwest Regional, 2002 Women's Final Four, 2003 Men's South Regional and 2004 Men's Final Four.

"We are proud and honored to host such a viable and exciting event," said UTSA President Ricardo Romo. "With the economic benefit for San Antonio and national exposure through the prominence of the Final Four, it's an added bonus to know that we will be setting a record for the largest crowd in Women's Final Four history."

"This is the first year the event is being held in a dome facility. With a seating configuration that accommodates more than 26,000 fans, this event will put UTSA in the national spotlight," said Rick Nixon, associate athletic director for media relations.

As host institution, UTSA has been directly involved with the local organizing committee and participated in the preparation and training of team hosts, merchandise, hospitality, the city's look, public relations and marketing. In addition, UTSA will oversee game operations, which include scorebook, game clock, shot clock, media tables, equipment, towels, referees, water bottles and cheerleaders.
