UTSA Greek Week includes alcohol awareness program

(March 29, 2002)--UTSA Greek Week is April 6-12 with the theme "Greek Life… Quality Tested and Guaranteed. As part of the week's events, UTSA registered student organizations will complete a service project by cleaning Leon Creek Greenway Park from 2-4 p.m. April 6 as well as host an alcohol awareness program at 7 p.m. April 9 in the UTSA Convocation Center. A schedule of events is listed below.

"I want San Antonio to realize that students at UTSA want to help make this city a better place," said Shane Foley, event organizer.

The keynote speaker at the event will be Mark Sterner, who will discuss the consequences of drinking and driving. Sterner has been a keynote presenter for the Northeastern Greek Leadership Association (NGLA) and the BACCHUS and GAMMA Peer Education Network's annual convention.

Sterner, a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity at a college in Rhode Island, was responsible for the deaths of three fraternity brothers while driving drunk. On the final night of their vacation, with an intoxicated Sterner at the wheel, the five men were in a serious accident. Three of Sterner’s fraternity brothers died. The video camera they brought along to capture the excitement of the Florida coast rolled until just 15 minutes before the accident.

In addition to suffering serious injuries, Sterner was sentenced to 23 months in a Florida prison on three felony counts. While serving his time, he spoke to more than 100,000 Florida students, and upon his release, began speaking nationwide about the dangers of drinking and driving and the resulting impairment of decision-making skills.

Greek Week sponsors are Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, UTSA Athletics and VOICES. The alcohol awareness program is free and open to the public.
