IED to mark start of construction March 26
(March 21, 2002)--U.S. Department of Commerce officials will join UTSA President Ricardo Romo and others for formal ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. March 26 at the Downtown Campus marking the beginning of construction on the $6.4 million permanent facility for the UTSA Institute for Economic Development (IED). Members of the Tri-Campus community are invited to the groundbreaking for the project adjacent to the Durango Building.
The Department of Commerce contributed $1.75 million toward the project. The 33,000-square-foot facility was designed by Ford, Powell & Carson Architects & Planners Inc., and will be constructed by Swinerton Builders of San Antonio.
The IED moved in late December from its long-time location in Cypress Tower
to temporary, leased quarters at KellyUSA. IED, which comprises 10 centers
and programs with 90 UTSA employees serving over 25,000 clients annually,
will remain at KellyUSA until the completion of the permanent facility at
the Downtown Campus by mid-2003. The IED programs provide economic development
technical assistance, small business consulting and training services throughout
the South Texas border region.
