(March 13, 2002)--The office of UTSA President Ricardo Romo is featured today in the Wall Street Journal's "Workspaces" section, which profiles each week the office of a corporate or community leader.

Wall Street Journal reporter Nancy Holt recently met with Romo in his office and spoke with him about his large collection of paintings by Latin American artists. A photographer then took shots of the office for the publication.

Romo and his wife, Harriett, started the collection during graduate school in California, where he worked in an art gallery taking pictures of paintings by local artists. Romo developed friendships with the artists, photographed their work, and in exchange they gave him discounted prices on paintings. Over the years the collection has grown to more than 500 pieces representing 300 artists.

Romo says when he and Harriett travel, they make it a point to visit museums and art galleries, particularly those with Latin American art. The Latin American art themes and culture serve as a reminder of who he is, so he surrounds himself wiith those things that he loves and appreciates, according to the Wall Street Journal story.

"I am of the nature that if we don't preserve our history, then it will get lost," said Romo.

Romo was recently appointed by President Bush to serve on the 21-member President’s Board of Advisers on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The 21-member group will advise the president on issues and challenges facing many of the country's historically black institutions of higher education, including an expanding need at all institutions for additional scholarships.

The "Workspaces" section also recently featured the offices of local car dealer and Minnesota Vikings owner Red McCombs and local rancher Michael Luigs.
