British actors to perform 'Macbeth' at UTSA March 27-28
(March 18, 2002)--Following October's 13th annual Shakespeare residency, the UTSA Department of English, Classics and Philosophy is hosting a return of Actors from the London Stage. The touring ensemble of five British actors will perform Shakespeare's "Macbeth" at 7:30 p.m. March 27-28 in the Arts Building Recital Hall on the 1604 Campus.
The actors, from such companies as the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre of Great Britain, are headed by Jane Arden, who last appeared at UTSA in "Romeo and Juliet" in 1996. The company visits selected American universities each year to perform and conduct workshops. The performers play multiple roles in the production that utilizes an uncut script, simple costumes and minimal scenery with an emphasis on language.
Written in 1606, William Shakespeare's "Macbeth" is considered one of the best tragedies ever written. The play tells the story of a man, urged by his wife and the prophecy of three witches, who murders the king to gain power. Themes in the play are the temptation of evil and the deceptiveness of appearances. An integral part of the thematic web is the play's most memorable character, Lady Macbeth, whose ambition for power leads her to madness and suicide.
Tickets are $15 for general admission, $7 for students, and are available
at the UTSA University Center Ticket Office on the 1604 Campus. For more information
