UTSA welcomes special assistant, Development Board members
(March 14, 2002)--UTSA Vice President for Administration/Interim Vice President for University Advancement Gerard Barloco announced the appointment of Maria Catherine "Cathy" Obien as special assistant to the vice president for university advancement. In the position, she is a liaison between Barloco, who oversees UTSA's fundraising and development arm, and the university's various constituencies, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, community leaders and donors.
Born in Hawaii and raised in the Philippines, Obien earned an undergraduate
degree in development communication at the University of the Philippines and
a master's in telecommunication at Michigan State University. Prior to joining
UTSA, she was assistant director of Murray State University's Center for Telecommunications
Systems Management in Kentucky. She has an extensive background in telecommunications
in both the public and private sectors, including MCIWorldCom and Michigan
State University.
Additionally, UTSA President Ricardo Romo announced six new appointees beginning three-year terms on the UTSA Development Board. Development Board Chairman Tom Frost, senior chairman of the board for Frost National Bank, welcomed the 50-member group's additions, announced by UTSA President Ricardo Romo.
"These individuals bring to the UTSA Development Board frames of reference and expertise comprising all major operations across the university," said Romo.
The new board members are: Ernest Bromley, chairman and CEO of Bromley Communications; Tony Chauveaux , Beaumont attorney and chairman of the Institute of Texan Cultures Development Board; Rene Escobedo, San Antonio attorney and president of the UTSA Alumni Association Board of Directors; attorney W. James Jonas III of the San Antonio firm Loeffler, Jonas and Tuggey, LLP; Roxi L. McCluskey, UTSA faculty member from the College of Liberal and Fine Arts Department of Art and Art History; and William Morrow, CEO of the Texas-based Grande Communications. Morrow began his term on March 6, and the others, on Nov. 28, 2001.
