UTSA receives state funds to assist disadvantaged students

(March 18, 2002)--During the 2001 legislative session, the Texas Coordinating Board for Higher Education was trusteed $250,000 to provide additional funding for fiscal year 2002 to universities that experienced an increase of at least five percent in both the number of economically disadvantaged students and the retention rate of those students.

Economically disadvantaged students are those whose expected family contribution is zero under federal financial aid rules.
Based on calculations by the coordinating board, the funding will be distributed to eight institutions, with UTSA receiving the most: $52,099.

The per-student allocation equals about $375 per student and is based on the number of first-time-in-college, full-time, economically disadvantaged students who enrolled in the summer 2000, fall 2000 or spring 2001 and who then returned as full-time students in fall 2001 with a GPA of 2.0 or better.

The eight institutions benefiting from this special appropriation are:

UTSA, $52,099
Texas Tech University, $50,600
UT-Dallas, $40,855
Lamar University, $38,230
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, $26,612
West Texas A&M University, $15,742
Sul Ross State University, $13,493
Texas Woman's University, $12,369
