UTSA professor partners with city on tree project
(March 12, 2002)--University of Texas at San Antonio College of Sciences professor Stephen Brown is working on a project with the City of San Antonio and other agencies that will determine the effects of the existing tree population on air quality, energy consumption and stormwater runoff.
As a member of the Alamo Forest Partnership, Brown and environmental science
graduate students will train volunteers involved with the project to conduct
tree surveys with Geographic Information System (GIS) and Global Positioning
System (GPS) technology.
Once trained, volunteers will begin a nine-month study to determine the impact
of the existing tree canopy and the economic benefits urban trees provide.
Similar studies have been conducted in Washington, D.C., Atlanta and Houston.
Partnership members include: City Public Service, the City of San Antonio,
Alamo Area Council of Governments, Texas Forest Service, San Antonio Water
Systems, Department of Defense and others.
