UTSA names associate vice provost for faculty affairs

(March 21, 2002)--Associate Professor of Accounting Sandra Welch has been appointed associate vice provost for faculty affairs at UTSA.

Welch, who joined UTSA in 1991, will monitor the faculty recruitment and appointment process and facilitate faculty development, particularly in the area of teaching. Additionally, she will manage new faculty orientation, monitor faculty workload and advise faculty on grievances and other issues.

The second faculty member to hold the position, Welch succeeds Executive Vice Provost David Johnson in the post, established in 1997.

"As Dr. Johnson has continued to take on more and more duties, it became necessary to reassign some of the workload," said Vice President for Academic Affairs/Provost Guy Bailey. "Sandra Welch is an excellent choice for the role," said Bailey. "Her record of university service and involvement is outstanding,"

Welch served as interim division director for accounting and information systems, and then as chair of the accounting department, following UTSA's academic restructuring. In 2000, she completed a six-month internship in the provost's office. She has also been active in university committee work, serving on 19 in the past year alone.

Additionally, Welch is an alumna of UTSA, having completed a master's in public accounting in San Antonio before earning a doctorate in accounting at Texas A&M University. Her undergraduate degree in elementary education was completed at Texas Woman's University.

"This is such an exciting time to be a part of UTSA," Welch said. "President Ricardo Romo has brought a vision to make UTSA a great university, and Dr. Bailey has an effective way of seeing that vision implemented."
