the nation's biggest automobile makers.

UTSA engineering students to compete at car race and design event

(May 6, 2002)--The University of Texas at San Antonio student chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) will take part in a formula-type car race and design competition May 15-19 in Pontiac, Mich.

The car, designed and constructed by 20 students, looks and functions like a formula-type race car and has an estimated value of over $45,000. The students will test their creation against cars from more than 100 universities from around the world at the competition hosted by Ford Motor Co., General Motors Corp. and DaimlerChrysler AG.

The 600-lb. car, which took more than two years to design and build, is powered by a 600cc motorcycle engine and can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds. Funding for the car came from local donations by individuals, corporations and other educational institutions. Students do not receive college credit for their work on this project, but the experience helps them to become better prepared for the engineering workplace after they graduate.

To show its support for the students, the university will exhibit the vehicle and host a send-off party from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, May 10 under the Sombrilla on the UTSA 1604 Campus.
