UTSA and Harlandale sign partner for scholarships

(May 17, 2002)--UTSA President Ricardo Romo today signed a memorandum of understanding establishing a partnership with the Harlandale Education Foundation (HEF) to match scholarships from that organization for graduates of Harlandale Independent School District (HISD) high schools who choose to attend UTSA.

"UTSA is honored to work with the district and HEF to encourage more students to make the transition from high school to college," Romo said. "This is only the beginning, and we look forward to seeing additional Harlandale students at either the Downtown Campus or the 1604 Campus."

Romo signed the agreement with Harlandale Superintendent Guillermo Zavala Jr. and Albert Flores, HEF board member and chief meteorologist for KENS television. Joining the three was HEF Scholar Sara Gonzales, a current sophomore majoring in communications at UTSA.

"This is the only program like this in the city, and perhaps in the State of Texas," said Zavala. "This is an exciting way to end the academic year knowing we are opening the doors to higher education for more students in the future."

"I am proud to be a graduate of Harlandale and a recipient of a foundation scholarship," Gonzales said. "I hope this encourages more students to look for scholarship resources to continue their education and eventually support programs that help other students gain access to higher education."

Gonzales, as a UTSA student, has organized several fund-raisers in San Antonio to raise scholarship funds for other students.

"The money HEF uses to support students comes from donors with a variety of backgrounds and financial resources," said Flores, who attended elementary and secondary schools in HISD. "HEF even is supported by school custodians, but all are happy to support HEF since they know it will send students to outstanding universities like UTSA."
