UTSA student wins second place in national PR competition

(May 20, 2002)--UTSA senior Jessica Horton received second place in a national competition for Public Relations Student of the Year. For Horton, life is full of second chances. She applied for the Daniel J. Edelman Award in 2001, as a junior at UTSA. Although she was not one of last year's winners, she applied again this year, and impressed the selection committee enough to win second place.

As second place winner, Horton will receive $500 and a guaranteed interview in the Edelman Public Relations Worldwide office of her choice. Her interests in regulatory issues and telecommunications led her to apply to Edelman's Washington, D.C. office. Horton is studying communications, with a concentration in public relations, and served as president of UTSA's PRSSA chapter.

She was also recently recognized by the International Association of Business Discipline (IABD) in a call for public relations case study papers. Horton wrote a case study titled "The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association: A Public Relations Analysis" and was asked to present the paper during the association's national confererence in Los Angeles on April 8. Horton is the first UTSA student to attend and to present at the IABD conference and one of very few students who gave presentations.

A record number of college students applied for this year's Daniel J. Edelman Award, which recognizes outstanding public relations students. Now in its 12th year, the awards are based on a nationwide competition sponsored by Edelman Public Relations and the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). This year’s applicants demonstrated a determination to gain real world experience while still in college, and their involvement in PRSSA also reflected their genuine interest in the field of public relations.

The Daniel J. Edelman/Public Relations Student Society of America award has been awarded annually since 1990 to PRSSA members who have demonstrated exceptional leadership ability, a commitment to a career in the field and who have contributed substantially to PRSSA. The award is named for Daniel J. Edelman, chairman and founder of Edelman Public Relations Worldwide.

"The record number of entrants this year made our job very difficult," said John D. Edelman, managing director, Global Human Resources for Edelman Public Relations Worldwide. "Our winners reflect the cream of the crop--their hands-on experience and PRSSA activities have demonstrated their dedicated commitment to the field of public relations."

Edelman is a global communications firm that includes a full-service public relations agency, research and advertising with 39 offices in North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia-Pacific. Key clients include Abbott Laboratories, Apple, Fuji Photo Film, Kraft, Microsoft, Tricon, Unilever and UPS.
