UTSA receives HUD grant to benefit graduate students

(May 29, 2002)--UTSA will share in a $2.9 million federal grant to help graduate students preparing for careers in community planning and development.

Announced by Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Mel Martinez, the grants are going to 28 universities nationwide and two area-wide planning organizations, including the North Central Texas Council of Governments, to benefit low-income and minority graduate students as they work toward their degrees and gain practical experience in their career field.

"Our nation's greatest resource is our young people, who will soon be the driving force behind revitalizing communities," said Martinez. "This funding will help a new generation of leaders who will be at the center of strengthening neighborhoods and communities across this country."

Provided under HUD's Community Development Work-Study Program, the grants will supplement approximately 100 students' tuition, travel and books over the next two years. Colleges and universities will use the program to offer scholarship aid and work experience to students enrolled in full-time graduate programs in community development or closely related files, such as urban planning, public policy or public administration.

UTSA's $85,278 portion will benefit students pursuing a master's degree in public administration through the Department of Public Administration. The program will provide each of three full-time students with full tuition and fees, together with a $9,000 work stipend as part of an internship placement. The internships, with the city of San Antonio, the Alamo Area Council of Governments and community organizations, will offer a unique experience in community building.

UTSA is currently accepting applications for the work-study program for fall 2002. For more information on UTSA's HUD Community Development Work-Study Grants for graduate students, call (210) 458-2533.
