Poster
for 31st Annual Texas Folklife Festival unveiled at ITC
(May 2, 2002)--The Texas Folklife Festival (TFF) and San Antonio photographer Rick Hunter unveiled the 2002 commemorative Texas Folklife Festival poster, "Faces of Folklife," May 1 during a ceremony at the Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC). Hunter's photographs capture the essence of the people who make up Texas. The Texas Folklife Festival will be June 6-9 at the ITC.
"From the celebration of our past to the promise of our future, this poster symbolizes a small slice of Texas spirit, pride and tradition," Hunter said. "I am delighted to have the opportunity to dedicate this to all of the participants who made, and will continue to make, this festival truly special."
Hunter, a self-taught photographer, began his career in 1987 as an Army photojournalist at the U.S. Military Academy. He spent more than 10 years as a staff photographer at the San Antonio Express-News, covering events ranging from Mexican presidential elections to Holy Week festivities in Guatemala. Hunter's current work includes a portrayal of youth gangs in San Antonio and images of the back roads of Texas and New Mexico.
Prior to his return to Texas in 1991, Hunter held freelance positions with New York Newsday, The Hartford Courant, Newsweek, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post and Associated Press. Hunter is regularly published in national publications and has won numerous awards. His works have been exhibited throughout Texas as well as in New York City and Mexico.
He is represented in regional galleries and design firms in Texas and New
Mexico and his images are part of many private and corporate collections worldwide
in France, Singapore, Australia, Canada, Spain and Mexico.
The signed, certified, limited edition of the 2002 Texas Folklife Festival
poster can be purchased for $50; the unsigned version is $20. The poster's
dimensions are 24" wide by 36" high. It can be purchased at various
retail outlets in San Antonio, local art galleries, the Institute of Texan
Cultures store and during the festival at souvenir tents located around the
festival grounds. Other souvenir products will be available at the festival.
