Bill Hamilton enlists the assistance of Mary Muniz to help
demonstrate the Evac-Chair.

Office of Emergency Preparedness gives Evac-Chair demonstrations

(Nov. 4, 2002)--The University of Texas at San Antonio recently acquired 15 specially designed chairs that can be used in the evacuation of persons in wheelchairs. Identical to those used on Sept. 11 at the World Trade Center, the "Evac-Chairs" were purchased with funds provided by the UT System.

Bill Hamilton, Office of Emergency Preparedness assistant director of public safety, recently gave a short presentation and demonstration to employees in the university advancement and development offices. One Evac-Chair is housed in every Tri-Campus building.

According to Hamilton, in an emergency situation a person in a wheelchair should contact the UTSA Police Department at (210) 458-4242 and wait for an officer to arrive at the stairwell of the building where the Evac-Chair is located. Officers responding have received training and will transport the employee to a safe location away from the building.

Volunteers are still needed to serve as building captains or safety coordinators for the 1604 Campus. A building captain is needed for each of the 1604 Campus buildings.

Ideally, the building captain's office would be located on the top floor of the building. Also, building safety coordinators are needed for each floor of each building. The telephone numbers of volunteers will be programmed into the UTSA Emergency Telephone Notification System.

In the event of an emergency situation, the building captain and safety coordinators for a specific building would be notified to begin the evacuation. Building captains and safety coordinators will receive evacuation training from the UTSA fire and safety coordinator and the Office of Emergency Preparedness.

To volunteer or to receive a group demonstration of the Evac-Chair, e-mail Bill Hamilton or Minnie Martinez.
