UTSA celebrates Laredo Day with students and officials

(Nov. 8, 2002)--Officials at the University of Texas at San Antonio celebrated "Laredo Day" Nov. 7 at the university's campuses to honor the students from Laredo who choose to attend UTSA. Laredo Mayor Elizabeth Flores accepted the proclamation from UTSA President Ricardo Romo during a reception at the 1604 Campus, as a group of UTSA students from Laredo looked on.

"Today we honor individuals who best represent the partnership UTSA and Laredo share -- a partnership based on dedication to education and providing our youth access to the brightest future possible," Romo said.

"I'm very excited to be here today," said Flores. "We know that UTSA is seen as a second home by so many Laredo students."

Laredo student Ernest Miller, a junior in biology, expressed his appreciation for the education he is receiving at UTSA. "It's great to have access to an emerging research university that is growing into a tier-one institution," said Miller. "On behalf of our students -- we are UTSA-proud and Laredo-proud."

Following the reception, Flores spoke in the Business Building on the emerging importance of South Texas cities and the border region, noting that Laredo is the second fastest growing city in the country.

Mayor Flores was accompanied to UTSA by representatives of the D.D. Hachar Charitable Trust, representatives of the three school districts serving Webb County and the Laredo Visitors and Conventions Bureau.

UTSA's enrollment includes nearly 500 students who graduated from Laredo schools, and many of these students receive financial support from the D.D. Hachar Charitable Trust, a Laredo foundation dedicated to education. Vidal M. Trevino, consultant to the D.D. Hachar Trust, accompanied the Laredo delegation. He is a former superintendent for the Laredo Independent School District.
