Challenger Learning Center students and faculty rendezvous with comet

(Nov. 14, 2002)--UTSA students and faculty from the Management of Technology program participated in a "Rendezvous with a Comet Mission" at the Challenger Learning Center at Brooks CityBase.

The Challenger Learning Center is part of a network of centers nationwide that were established in memory of the Challenger shuttle crew. The learning center is comprised of a space station that gives students a simulated experience of working in space and mission control, modeled after mission control at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The MOT crew worked in mission control with their counterparts on the space station to perform a series of experiments and tasks to locate a specific meteor and analyze its composition. The goal of the mission was to construct a probe and plot an intercept course.

"This unique, hands-on learning experience encourages team building, problem solving and communication skills," said Bill Flannery, coordinator of the program. "These are the same skill sets that we are teaching to our students."

The Management of Technology program offers professionals in scientific, engineering, mathematical or other technology-based disciplines the opportunity to develop and improve managerial and business skills necessary to lead organizations into the future.

Two graduate degrees are offered in this program. The first is a management of technology concentration in the M.B.A. program and the other is a master of science degree in the management of technology.
