UT-Austin marine scientist discusses research with UTSA students

(Nov. 22, 2002)--University of Texas at Austin Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) professor G. Joan Holt (pictured above at center) spoke to a roomful of UTSA students Wednesday in the Science Building on the 1604 Campus as the inaugural speaker for the Presidential Lecture Series.

Holt, at the request of UTSA President Ricardo Romo, visited the campus to discuss research she and her students are conducting at UTMSI in Port Aransas, 35 miles northeast of Corpus Christi. Romo hopes to develop a partnership in which UTSA students could study at the institute over the summer and receive class credit.

Such a partnership would coincide with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's expected review of UTSA's request for a doctoral program in environmental science and engineering. The program would emphasize research on natural resources such as water, land and air and address issues such as water contamination, land restoration and air pollution.

According to Holt, over 70 million tons of fish were caught and consumed around the world over the last 15 years. The over-harvesting and habitat loss have resulted in declining fish populations. The decline, in addition to the fact that many fish in the larvae stage need live prey in order to survive, have caused fish mortality rates to rise. Holt and fellow researchers plan to develop alternative feeding techniques to help increase fish populations.
