Nov. 7 is free movie night at 1604 Campus

(Nov. 6, 2002)--The Campus Activities Board will sponsor a screening of "Election," a movie starring Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick, at 7 p.m. at the Sombrilla Plaza. Rain location is the University Center Laurel Room. The event is free and open to all. Snacks and drinks will be provided by the Student Government Association.

Design concepts sought for permanent Sept. 11 memorial project

(Nov. 6, 2002)--Deadline for submission of design concepts for the UTSA permanent Sept. 11 memorial project is 5 p.m. Nov. 11. Ideas can be submitted for an outdoor location on the 1604 Campus or for an outdoor or indoor location for the Downtown Campus.

The item can be a mural, sculpture, bench, tapestry or other format. but cannot be larger than 5 feet wide, 5 feet deep and 6 feet high. Suggestions must be submitted in writing with an accompanying sketch and cover page listing your name and contact information.

UTSA staff member selected for Leadership San Antonio

(Nov. 6, 2002)--Theresa Vargas, staff member in the University of Texas at San Antonio Office of K-16 Initiatives and Honors College, has been selected to take part in Leadership San Antonio XXVII.

Sponsored jointly by the Greater San Antonio and San Antonio Hispanic chambers of commerce, Leadership San Antonio provides a learning experience for existing and emerging leaders who live and work in the San Antonio metro area.

Vargas, who worked with EG&G Management on the KellyUSA project and with the San Antonio Spurs area-development project prior to joining UTSA, is project manager for the Employer Education Council, a partnership of community employers and educators dedicated to improving San Antonio's workforce. Tom Frost, senior chairman of Frost Bank and chairman of the UTSA Development Board chairs the group.

A San Antonio native and graduate of Marshall High School, Vargas completed her undergraduate degree at Texas A&M and earned a J.D. and M.B.A. at St. Mary's University.

Author to speak on teaching writing Nov. 14

(Nov. 6, 2002)--Author Randy Bomer will discuss "Teaching Writing for a Better World," from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 14 in the University Center Mesquite Room (2.01.24), 1604 Campus. The event is free and open to all.

Bomer is author of "For a Better World: Reading and Writing for Social Action" and "Time for Meaning: Crafting Literate Lives in Middle and High School." He was recently elected vice president of the National Organization for Teachers of English. The presentation is sponsored by the Department of English, Classics, and Philosophy.

UTSA student receives Texas Business Hall of Fame scholarship

(Nov. 6, 2002)--M.B.A. student Ann Rastorfer has received the Texas Business Hall of Fame Foundation Scholarship for $5,000.  Rastorfer, who maintains a 4.0 grade point average, is a business development manager for H-E-B.  This is the 15th consecutive year a UTSA student has been awarded this scholarship.

Scholarship recipients must demonstrate leadership traits in academic and campus activities, a propensity for entrepreneurial achievement and outstanding moral character.  The Texas Business Hall of Fame recognizes members of the state's business community who have made outstanding contributions in their field and raises funds to support students in MBA programs throughout the state.

College of Business Kudos

(Nov. 6, 2002)--Bruce Bublitz, dean of the College of Business, was the keynote speaker at the Ph.D. Project Finance Doctoral Student Association Dinner at La Mansion del Rio. He was also a panelist during a meeting for the NSHMBA discussing graduate business education opportunities.
 
John Merrifield, professor of economics, was recently profiled in the Dallas Morning News "Ask-an-Expert" section on the voucher issue. He is the author of "The School Choice Wars" and a senior fellow at the Texas Public Policy Foundation.
 
Linda Shepherd, lecturer III in the Department of Information Systems, was named to the 7th edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers. Professors are nominated by students who are themselves Who's Who honorees. Nominees are chosen because they have "made a difference in a student's life."
 
Clyde Stoltenberg, director of International Business Programs, spoke at an international symposium on the "WTO and Services" by the Chinese Ministry of Justice and All China Lawyers Association in Beijing. He presented "Trade in Services, Legal Services and China's Accession to the WTO" and co-chaired a panel on Trade in Services and the Legal Services Industry. While in China, he also visited with alumni of the Liu Family Foundation program and met with the students who will be participating in the Spring 2003 program.
 
Bennie Wilson, assistant dean, was recently named to the board of directors of Junior Achievement of South Texas. UTSA was recently recognized as being the organization with the largest number of Junior Achievement volunteers, most of these volunteers being College of Business students.
 
Wilson was also selected for the Leadership San Antonio program jointly sponsored by the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. This programs provides a seven-month learning experience for existing and emerging business and community leaders.

Discourse and literacy professor receives scholarship

(Nov. 6, 2002)-- Rosalind Horowitz, professor of discourse and literacy studies, received a scholarship from the National Academy of Education and was invited to participate in the meeting of the Academy at the University of Toronto. Horowitz led a discussion group and participated in sessions on Issues in School Reform and Standards and Methods for Educational Research.

UTSA fencing club does well in competition

(Nov. 6, 2002)--UTSA's fencing club, Swordplay@UTSA, recently competed for the first time in the SouthWest Intercollegiate Fencing Association tournament at Southwest Texas State University. The Foil A squad (Jose J. Sanchez, Pablo Carranza and Amanda Corgill) came in first place in the foil event.

The Saber Squad (Amanda Hensley, David Heiman, Konstantinos Kalofanos and Janet Brandt) came in fifth place in the saber event. The Foil B squad also reported some surprise upsets in their first fencing competition ever.

Flu vaccine available for $8

(Nov. 6, 2002)--Flu vaccine is available for students, staff and faculty at the 1604 Campus and Downtown Campus clinics for $8, payable by cash, check or UTSA card. Please bring a UTSA ID.

At the 1604 Campus, Student Health Services, SB 1.03.02, vaccine is available 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday.

At the Downtown Campus clinic, BV 1.308, vaccine is available 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday and Thursday, and 9-10 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

Honor society holds 6th annual drive to help needy children

(Nov. 6, 2002)--The Alpha Chi National Honor Society's 6th Annual Care Bear Drive will be held through Dec. 6. Donate new or used but cleaned stuffed animals to make the holidays a bit brighter for San Antonio's needy children.

Donation drop-off points are: 1604 Campus, University Center Room 1.08.20E and Downtown Campus, Frio Street Building Room 4.454 (university communications office).

Downtown Campus health fair to offer health screenings for students

(Nov. 6, 2002)--More than 20 community health agencies will pack into the Frio Street Building Commons at the Downtown Campus from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14 to promote wellness and provide quality health services and information to students and faculty in a fun and interactive environment.

The health fair is a good way for students to learn more about their health and provides time-saving services, according to Derrick Neal, Student Health Services health educator intern. The agencies offer "a reminder of things you don't think about."

"It's easy for college students to not think about being healthy," Neal says.

Free services to be offered at the event are glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure and body fat percent screenings. Additional services will include massages, chiropractic spine/back assessments, nutrition counseling and a multitude of local resources/agencies answering questions and providing health information important to students.
